Shore Temple
The cluster of temples and other sites in and around Mahabalipuram on the East coast of Tamil Nadu are significant in the evolution of Indian temple structural design and some show the forms of early wooden structures translated into stone. The Shore Temple has been protected by a substantial sea wall and escaped damage in the tsunami that struck the East coast in 2004. Remains of further offshore temples were uncovered by the surging sea and are currently being studied. Mahabalipuram is a pleasant and quiet town and is well worth visiting. It’s located about 60 kilometres south of Chennai.
