The Entryway
So tangible and tactile: rough bricks and cobblestones; wet paving and glass, and solids penetrated by volumes, some dark and mysterious, leading who knows where, some glowing with illumination and cinnamon cakes or soft cuddly behind ancient glazing bars. It’s nearly closing time in Rumors and The Shepherd’s Purse on Church Street, Whitby.
Beautiful.. I like cobblestones
They certainly give character to a street. Thanks Rajiv.
We don’t have those in my part of the world, John…intriguing passageway.
Each time we return a little of the character of the place is eroded. This is an attractive old world town but the demands of modern life force change where none is needed. The biggest changes occurred in the 1950s and 60s when whole blocks of picturesque buildings were razed. Such is progress.
There are times when I absolutely loathe progress, John…and I can tell that this place could have held such old-world charm….
Yes, it’s still a charming little town, and was the home of the photographer Frank Sutcliffe, who’s work is worth viewing.
