I always feel it’s a shame that later generations have chosen to cover windows with screens of various sorts, particularly at the alter end – it makes things seem altogether more oppressive rather than joyous and open.
Sorry, I was meaning the reredos and such like – awful dark wood in front of windows located specifically to let the light flood.
I agree about the wire mesh on many church windows – plays havoc on some window shots. Unfortunately, louts and rocks seem to get together when a beautiful window is nearby.

Agreed, Stephen, unfortunately the repair bills start growing, but a sheet of toughened glass does may be the best solution.
