Engines at Wankaner Junction
A lifelong interest in steam took me to Gujarat in 1997 where the day’s of steam traction on the metre gauge lines of India Railways were drawing to a close.
As in the UK in 1968, the locomotives were often in dire condition and were being run down and taken out of service when they failed. Despite this the railwaymen were a proud breed and kept things going as best they could. I was given a very warm welcome especially as I was taking a close interest in their work and in their lovely steam engines.
