Temple Elephant

Temple Elephant

A third view at the Virupaksha Temple. Outside the gateway there was a thriving business selling bananas to the visitors, and no doubt the temple elephant was the prime beneficiary.

The temple dates from about the 7th century and is dedicated to Lord Shiva, known here as Virupaksha who was the consort of the local goddess Pampa. The 50 metre eastern gateway tower has a nine-tiered structure of brick over a stone base and can be seen over a wide distance.
