A metal fabricating workshop near the harbour in Kannur, Kerala, and one of several spotted as we left the harbour and its many fishing boats. There were two men at work and this guy was out the back when I asked the first guy if he minded me taking some photographs. You can see his enquiring and somewhat quizzical look at his workmate…. a sort of….’what’s this idiot doing here?’ kind of look.
I’ve seen this look in the UK when photographing in a garage workshop, but the question at home would be, ‘Is this guy from the Health and Safety Executive?’ which leads to all kinds of insecurity about the law and the suspicion that you are snooping to find out if they’re doing something wrong. It’s a pity we have to live in such a challenging and suspicious society. In contrast the people of India are generally much more open and accepting.
