This has been a particularly rewarding picture to work on and the outcome is unexpected. I enjoy writing, and like my photography, I often set out without any clear idea where the writing is going, and with this picture I had only a vague notion that the light background was distracting, so experimented with different ways of getting rid of it.

The result is a self contained and intimate scene, as though taken in a workshop. The scene was actually acted out beside the station platform in Coonoor where this man and others were attending to the coupling of the locomotive to its set of carriages, and they were surrounded by an interested group of onlookers. All that, though, is only of passing interest. It’s the final outcome that matters……
