Protest

Protest

This montage was created from three pictures: the building is from Kannur in Kerala; the young man was part of a lively group at the Theyyam Festival in the village of Kotalli, and the smoke came from a photo taken near the harbour in Kannur.

I think that this picture demonstrates how our interpretation of a photo is very much determined by the context. In this picture the boy appears to be aggressive, but when you see him in the original context he is clearly having fun. Whoever said that photos don’t lie. The original photo can be seen here.

  1. Your interpretation is interesting. My first feeling was something about fear (because of a fire, an explosion or something like that). I thought the boy is on the run.
    Anyway … well done 🙂

  2. You nailed this one! So it seemed. You fooled me. But, that is the art behind photography. Except in journalism…I guess they just do what they want for sensationalism and on the other hand there are some great honest journalist’s out there.

    • Yes, and somewhat unnerving….it was the character of the building that sparked it initially as it did look, as you suggest, like a war zone, so adding the shouting boy and the smoke just confirmed my feelings about it.

      Thanks again, my friend.

  3. Nicely done my friend 🙂 Very powerful from two points 1) from the image itself and the personal interpretation it brings to mind and 2) from an ethical perspective and how images can lie

    Well done
    Regards
    Mark
