Classical Concrete
Ugly and derided, motorway viaducts force their brutal way through the Victorian streets of our cities…….. and yet they can have a grandeur of scale and proportion that almost matches the coffered classicism of the Pantheon in Rome. After all, the Romans invented concrete. The Glasgow underworld.
They do make for grand architecture! The minimalist detailing, the scale of the space and the reflections on the underside of the roadway turn it into a pretty fine spot, indeed.
Thanks for your observations. Not knowing Glasgow very well I had to be quick with the camera. Another through the windscreen shot. It was fortunate that Simon had cleaned the car!
Portland has a new viaduct that I caught last fall on a beautiful sunny day: http://sanslartigue.wordpress.com/2011/10/09/under-the-viaduct/
