Snow Boats
This photo dates from 2006. March 12. My first digital camera was a Minolta Dimage 7. The settings were ISO 100, 1/500 second at f/6.7
Kirkcudbright Harbour. There was heavy snow overnight. It was a Sunday and there was little traffic, so the roads were well covered. The strong easterly wind was blowing the snow off the edge of the harbour. This is one of the first photographs that I manipulated. I moved the bollard……

The B&W allows for great emphasis on the blowing snow
Thanks LB, yes the original in colour didn’t work.
You totally captured the essence of the day…COLD!
Hi Robyn, with that easterly wind, yes it was very cold.
I like everything about this photography, especially the blowing snow.
Thanks very much Mary, and we still have plenty of winter left for scenes like this.
Brrrrrrrrrrrrr John, I can feel the wind and the blowing snow is hurting my eyes. Brave man, to go out in these conditions and take those wonderful photographs.
Thanks, it was a fierce cold wind.
LOve the Toning suits it well cold n green, reminds me of Scott of the Antarctic !
Hi Lesley and thanks, more like Nanook of the North!
Lovely shot – and as everyone else has said – the blowing snow makes it
Hi Noeline, yes and blizzard conditions are fortunately rare where we are on the west coast.
I like all of the angles of the ropes and lines…and would never have guessed about the bollard. I think I would have enjoyed being there, John….
Yes, weather like that can make you feel alive….and is a challenge for photography.
I think that’s why I like the cold, John…all those years in the desert were so wearing…so oppressive, temperature-wise…and now the cold is like a jump-start. I’ve not attempted shooting the active blustery weather, but I can imagine that it would be difficult with all of the blowing and spitting water and snow….
Just keeping it off the lens is a major concern, otherwise you need a camera that you can use with your gloves on.
Glad to hear that a cool climate suits you better, Scott.
Seems like it would be very trying….
Love this and would pit it on my wall and look at it all the time!!
Hi Nigel…..be glad to sell you a copy…
